Glossary
The words below are used in the admin panel and in this guide. Each one links to the page that explains it in full.
Account portal. The website where a choir with a hosted site manages its account: details, plan, invoices, domain and sites. It is separate from your choir's own site and its admin panel. See Sign in to your account.
Admin. Someone who can log in to the admin panel to run the site. Also the name of one of the three kinds of admin. See The three kinds of admin.
Admin (the role). An admin who can do everything except add, change or remove other admins. See Roles and permissions.
Announcement. A piece of news for members, posted in the member portal and, if you choose, emailed to them. See Post an announcement.
Archive. To record a finished concert on the Past Events page, with its poster and details. See Archive a concert to Past Events.
Bot check. A small test, such as a tick box, that a person must pass before sending the contact form, so that automated programs cannot flood you with junk. See Stop spam with a bot check.
Bundle. The downloadable package of the software that a self-hosted site is installed from or updated with. See What is in the download.
Campaign. A named appeal for gifts, such as a spring fund, with a goal and a period, so you can see what each one raised. See Run a campaign.
Check-in. Marking a ticket as used when its holder arrives at the concert. See Check people in at the door.
CNAME. A kind of DNS record that makes one name, such as www.example.org, point to another. You add one when you connect your own domain. See Use your own domain name.
Complimentary. A free ticket you give to someone, recorded as an order that costs nothing. See Sell, hold or give tickets yourself.
DNS record. An instruction stored with your domain name that says where the name leads, for example to your website. See Use your own domain name.
Donor. A person or organisation who has given to your choir, kept on a record with their gifts. See Add and look after donors.
Draft. A page of your own that is saved but hidden from visitors until you make it visible. See Drafts, menus and the order of your pages.
Edition. The kind of licence a self-hosted site has: Community (free, with a "Powered by" link) or Standard (paid, with the link optional). See Community and Standard editions.
Eligible amount. The part of a gift that a receipt can be given for. It is the whole gift unless you set a lower figure, for example when the donor received something in return. See Record a gift.
Environment variable. A named setting given to the server from outside the software, such as SITE_URL. Only people who run a self-hosted site use them. See Environment variables.
Feature switch. One of the on and off switches in Site Settings, Features, that adds or removes a page or part of the site. See Feature switches.
Gift. One donation recorded against a donor, with its amount, date and how it was paid. See Record a gift.
Hold. Tickets set aside for a buyer. When someone pays by card the places are held for 30 minutes while they pay; and you can record a sale as Hold, to pay on arrival. See Sell, hold or give tickets yourself.
Hosted. A site that we run for you, with the server, updates and email looked after. See The hosted service.
Licence key. The code that registers a self-hosted site with us. Each key is for one website. See Your licence key.
Lineup. An ordered list of songs for a concert, which you can publish so members see it with the rehearsal tracks. See Build a concert lineup and publish it.
Login link. The single-use link emailed to a member (or an admin) to log in, instead of a password. It works once and lasts 15 minutes. See How members log in.
Mailing. A message you write and send to a list that is not your members: your donors, or the people holding tickets for a concert. See Email your donors.
Main address. On a hosted site with more than one domain, the one the site uses for its own links and emails. See Bare domains, two domains and the main address.
Manager. The kind of admin who looks after the day-to-day content (concerts, members, tickets and so on) but not how the site is set up. See Roles and permissions.
Member. Someone who is in your choir and can use the member portal. A member is not an admin. See Members and the member portal.
Member portal. The private part of the site where members log in to see announcements, the schedule, rehearsal tracks, files and links. See Set up the member portal.
Official receipt. A receipt for income tax purposes, which is printed and signed rather than emailed. See Issue receipts.
Opt-out. A person's choice to stop receiving a kind of email from you. See How people stop your emails.
Order. One purchase of tickets, by one buyer, for one concert. See Find an order and download the list.
Page. A page of your own that you add to the site with the formatting editor, under Pages. See Add a page of your own.
Palette. A set of colours for your site: either one colour, or four that work together. See Change your colours and Themes, palettes and font pairings.
Past event. A finished concert or event kept on the Past Events page with its poster. See The Past Events page.
Plain receipt. A thank-you receipt that can be emailed. It says it is not an official receipt for income tax. See Print, email, replace or cancel a receipt.
Plan. What a hosted site includes: Free, Starter or Premium. See Plans and editions compared.
Section (of a choir). A group of singers who sing the same part, such as sopranos. Each member can be given one, and rehearsal tracks can be made for each. Also called a voice part. See Set up your sections and voice parts.
Section (of Site Settings). One group of settings in Site Settings, such as Theme or Contact. See How Site Settings works.
Self-hosted. A site that you run yourself on your own server, with the software we supply. See Self-hosting.
Site Admin. The kind of admin who can do everything, including adding and removing other admins. See Roles and permissions.
Site Settings. The part of the admin panel where you change your choir's name, colours, wording, features and more. See How Site Settings works.
Song. An entry in your music library that rehearsal tracks are attached to. See Add songs and upload rehearsal tracks.
Theme. A ready-made pairing of colours and fonts that you can choose in one click. See Choose a ready-made theme.
Ticket type. A kind of ticket for a concert with its own price, such as Adult or Student. See Add ticket types and prices.
Track. An audio recording of a song for one voice part, which members play or download in the portal. See Add songs and upload rehearsal tracks.
Update channel. Which kind of new versions a self-hosted site is offered: stable, beta or development. See Beta versions and update channels.
Voice part. See Section (of a choir).
